Land Before Lines is an extended portrait project culminating in Walton-Healey’s first book (Hunter Publishers, 2014). Reflecting his enduring passion for poetry, it showcases the photographer’s relationship with a community of writers situated across his home state of Victoria.

As a publication, Land Before Lines consists of sixty-eight unique photographic portraits, each presented alongside a poem, written by the photographed poet, in response to their image. The publication launched during an exhibition of the portraits held at Thousand Pound Bend (Melbourne) in 2014 as part of The Emerging Writers’ Festival. The portraits exhibited at Canberra’s Manning Clarke’s House later the same year, and appeared most recently in the North Rotunda Gallery of the State Library of Victoria, forming part of the entrance to Mirror: New views on photography.
