Yarro Yarro: reflecting on the unseen is the working title of a project concerned with the ever-flowing surface(s) of Birrarung. While celebrating the joy of pattern, colour, abstraction and improvisation, these photos simultaneously document a transitional process; an attempt, by their photographer, to establish deeper connection to this iconic river and surrounding city of Melbourne.
In January 2025, the photographer produced a maquette artist book, drawing conceptual inspiration from The Bunyip of Berkeley’s Creek (Penguin, 1978). Through aesthetic play and experimentation, this publication aims to show the beauty latent in discordance and incongruity. In relation to a river long perceived as dirty and/or dying, the book and project similarly strive to contribute to a broader restorative process; one encouraging us to see the river and world anew.
